Singapore Summer, Day Four
May. 28th, 2004 09:29 pmGot Cassandra fixed. It was her charging board, which needed to be replaced - a quick repair at Sim Lim Square. I was going to wander down to the Comics Mart to meet
logam after that, and was at the bus-stop when who should I see wandering over but the man himself.
We spent the afternoon at the Mart, watching some DVDs and generally catching up, both with him and the staff. I was reading some comics for the first time in literally months - I'm so out of touch with what's going on in the mainstream world these days, but it seems I'm not missing much. The new issue of "DC: The New Frontier" was out, Darwyn Cooke and Dave Stewart's somewhat world weary and cynical re-construction of the DC universe through the lens of the contemporary American historical scene during the years the comics came out. It's interesting, but the individual issues are way too expensive. Something to look out for when the trades come out, I guess.
The other title that I've been meaning to look up but can't really afford to budget for is Strazyncski's "Supreme Power", which is his re-construction of Marvel's faux Justice League, the Squadron Supreme (which Mark Gruenwald turned into an amazing mini-series in the 1980s, prefiguring Watchmen and the idea of super-heroes as well-meaning but ultimately fascistic). For those that understand the shorthand, it's basically "Ultimate JLA", with Hyperion (Superman) being raised by the US government instead of the Kents and Nighthawk (Batman) being a black vigilante and Princess Power (Wonder Woman) as an immortal goddess with accompanying aloofness and inhumanity. It's well written, certainly, but not groundbreaking enough to make me want to spend the money that I don't have.
Maybe I'm learning to prioritize after all.
