I take Ariel Sharon and Yasser Arafat and put them in a featureless room. They are told that only one of them is going to leave the room alive, and that the other will have his country and people wiped out. No more compromises, no more options. Then I toss a combat knife into the center of the room and lock the door. And wait.

They'd probably both die from massive heart attacks that they actually have to take some sort of responsibility for their actions instead of sending others to do their bidding. Knife untouched.

Wouldn't it be better the other way around?

I'm not sure your results would be any different from what you might get if you did the same thing with two random strangers plucked off the street. (Provided that they are not of the same country and people, of course.)

You misunderstand. This is not a well thought-out solution. This is not even a solution. This was just a thought, borne out of frustration and anger. And the impulse to simply drop a nuke and wipe out Israel, the West Bank *and* the Gaza Strip and everyone in it and to say fuck them, if they want to annihilate each other, let's finish the job for them, is extremely tempting.

Here's a thought you might like, proposed on one of my messageboards:

Poll everybody in the area as to how willing they are to kill and/or die for the land. Take everybody who isn't willing and move them elsewhere for six months. Then supply everybody who's left with the best armaments money can buy.
And move the relocated people back in as soon as the last of the diehards are dead.

This is roughly analogous to the "solution" one of my dorm friends thought up back in college for the problem of overcrowded prisons.

Take all the prisoners and turn them loose in a large, enclosed building. Like, say, the Astrodome. Toss in an equal number of weapons. Tell the prisoners that whichever ONE of them is left alive gets total amnesty for all crimes.

When one prisoner is left, open the door and put one bullet in his head. No electrocutions, no alcohol swabs before a lethal injection, no gas chamber, no firing squad, no rope for hanging...just one round of ammo.
