Hold The Line - God's in a meeting

I just found a Bible Study home page that uses the lyrics of "Hold the Line" as a call towards "soldiers of the Cross" to hold against iniquity in these Last Days.

I'm... not sure how I feel about that.

I think what that says is you wrote a damn good song with a sentiment that speaks to people.

The truth of the matter is that you can't choose who it speaks to.

Good point. You're absolutely right, of course.

I think my discomfort stems from the fact that I never intended it to be about religion and the idea that it might be used by people who, doctrinally, I disagree with.

Not that the guy that wrote that page is one of those extreme fundamentalists that I abhor (at least, he doesn't seem to be), but the possibility that he could have been disturbed me somewhat.

At best, I suppose, it's interesting to see the song take on that kind of life on its own.

My first thought is that I'd be screaming with rage if a song of mine were used that way. But I wouldn't have written that particular song -- I do like it, but it's not the kind of song that speaks from me, if you understand what I mean. It has to be granted that it could be used by soldiers fighting for any cause, and I'm sure you knew that when you wrote it.

But you have a legitimate complaint that the song was quoted in its entirety without credit. The author of the website may think it's an old song from some past war (which would put you in the company of Eric Bogle :). You should at least ask for credit, and perhaps would want to request a disclaimer.

Well, to be fair he didn't quote the whole song, and he did credit me in a footnote.

Ah. I missed the footnote.

...yyyyyyeah. Um.

I'd probably ask them please not to use it, if it were me.

If it were me, I'd at least prod the page author to give you authorship credit of your own piece. Then when people click through and find where their "pastor" is *finding* his material, they may think twice...

(heh. A good use for Cthulhu filk, after all! :))

I did get a little grin further down the page as he quoted a work titled "We're All Toads."
