NEW SONG: Leap of Faith (1st draft)

1st draft, really, and right now the tune is a little high for my own voice. A bit nervous and wary about the whole thing because it's the first original song I've written for nearly 4 years. Comments welcome.

Leap of Faith
Music and Lyrics © 2008 Terence Chua

Hello Sam
I've been watching you
Stamping on your toys
Trying to make out a message
Straining through all the noise
Girls in red dresses
With long flowing tresses
And clowns holding hands
Searching around you
'Cause right here you know
No one understands
Take a look at the lawman
Flying high on a leap of faith
Is the world around you really here
    If you can't feel alive?
Maybe this is the make believe
    Does it matter anyway?
    All the questions left unanswered
As you take the final dive?
    Is there life on Mars?
Goodbye Sam
You were always trapped
It was such a crime
Hanging there in the morning air
Caught between two times
Things just were never
The same or whatever
Since you got back
Nothing makes sense
And you know it won't ever
Till you skip that final track
Take a look at the lawman
Flying high on a leap of faith
Is the world around you really here
    If you can't feel alive?
Maybe this is the make believe
    Does it matter anyway?
    All the questions left unanswered
As you take the final dive?
    Is there life on Mars?

And you told her that you'd never leave her
It's a promise you don't want to break
But if one isn't real and the other's a dream
From which one do you want to wake?

Take a look at the lawman
Flying high on a leap of faith
Is the world around you really here
    If you can't feel alive?
Maybe this is the make believe
    Does it matter anyway?
    All the questions left unanswered
As you take the final dive?
    Is there life on Mars?

Alternate tuning won't help the range problem?

The two short vowels in short succession - "skip" and "track" might be a problem if the musical phrase is slow. Can't say more / without the score.

It's that as written, it climbs from middle to high, but it may be more of a function of my out of shape voice than anything. Will be playing around with the tune a bit to see if it helps.

"Skip" and "track" are fine, as far as I can tell. Thanks.

What's this based on? I am intrigued!

It's based on a BBC television series called "Life on Mars" (2 seasons of 16 epiosdes, now over, but there's a sequel series with a different protagonist called "Ashes to Ashes" which just finished its first season). The basic premise, as narrated by the character of Manchester Police detective Sam Tyler in the credits:

"My name is Sam Tyler. I had an accident, and I woke up in 1973. Am I mad, in a coma, or back in time? Whatever's happened, it's like I've landed on a different planet. Now, maybe if I can work out the reason, I can get home."

The title is taken from David Bowie's 1973 song "Life on Mars?", and it has a rocking early-70s progressive rock soundtrack, not to mention being an incredibly good series - think a retro, 1970s cop show with an underlying fantastic twist.
