I Am My Dad
by The Electric Bonsai Band

The ties get wider
The pants get tight
I look inside but the memory stalls
The shirts get brighter
The pants turn white
It's almost winter Miami calls

The belts get bigger
As does the waist
I never figured on being this vast
Look in the mirror
That's not my face
It's happened so hard and so fast
    And I, I, I
    I am my dad
    Yes I, I, I
    I am my dad
The eyes get weaker
The cheeks get pink
The hair gets thinner, what hair still remains
I can't wear sneakers
I start to shrink
The ground gets closer with every day
    And I, I, I
    I am my dad
    Yes I, I, I
    I am my dad

Though the signs may seem blurry
      When out on the highway
Don't tell me I'm legally blind
      There's no need to worry
We'll make it through my way
We'll straddle that dotted white line
The pulse gets quicker
The ankles creak
I grab my slippers when I have to run
The blood gets thicker
The bladder's weak
It's passed on from father to son
    And I, I, I
    I am my dad
    Yes I, I, I
    I am my dad

*grin*

I picked this one up from Big Times in a Small Town, the album from Christine Lavin's first Martha's Vineyard retreat. My favorite song on the album, though, is "Summer of Love". You can hear the audience laughing and talking in the background up until one particular line -- at which point they go dead-silent, because they all have to find out how the story plays out.
