Frakking Toaster

By now, some of you may have heard that I'll be the Toastmaster for next year's GAFilk. I couldn't make it this year because I had to choose between going back to the South and attending the British filkcon, but [livejournal.com profile] autographedcat asked me if I wanted to take the role for 2010 and I was more than happy to... I'd have been there anyway, guest or no.

So, see y'all there. Now, if someone can only tell me what a Toastmaster is supposed to do...

I get the impression it is a bit like Master of Ceremonies, someone who 'toasts' the other guests (like at a formal dinner)?

Do you have a toaster? :)

Seriously, congratulations. And in this case, a toastmaster is generally responsible for handling introductions of the various performers. And giving a concert. Plus any other duties he may negotiate with the concom to assume...

Well, it involves jamming....

Many congrats. Between you and Alex, I have to be there next year. :)

Toastmasters are supposed to set the tone, introduce the guests, and make sure the whole program runs smoothly and on time.

It's like being an MC- but more fun. You'll do fine!

Toast people (as in "raise a glass"). Tell them why filk is the best thing ever that doesn't come on toast.

Seriously, congrats! I really really want to get back to Gafilk, and next year sounds really good, especially since we're missing you in England due to us staying home (finances ...). Siiiigh. We shall see.

In addition to other duties, the toastmaster is supposed to give orders to the toast if any such is present at breakfast.

You spend the entire convention in the consuite supervising the toaster to make sure it doesn't burn the hotel down. That was the original plan, but over the years the usual consuite one-up-manship has continued and now you need to have access to a good range of bread-type products (including bagels and croissants) and remember to bring the gluten-free, plus smoked salmon, a variety of preserves, spreads and cheeses (including low-fat and non-dairy).

Oh and the "Englishman in New York" I like my bread toasted on one side is just a windup Sting put in to make the Americans feel uncultured and to make them objects of ridicule if they came to London and asked for their toast that way :-) ... a bit like serving tea with both a milk jug and a wedge of lemon, and then laughing at people who put both in their tea!

You'll be the guy who says, "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain."

Seriously, though, the two main duties are to introduce the Saturday afternoon programming (be sure to make everybody who does a 2x10 fill out a note card) and be on the panel for My Filk Friday night. Plus a concert.

And in my experience observing TMs at work from the audience, there's a certain amount of think-on-your-feet crowd control humor to keep things moving and people interested when inevitable hiccups in the schedule come up.

Congratulations! UT is building up to our first "toast" gig, too, at FKO this year. We've been spending some dinner sessions already sorting through exactly what we should be doing as Toastmasters. We're developing some fun ideas for our introductions :). As Toastmasters we've also been asked to give a concert and run a workshop and we're going to participate in the children's concert and perhaps host a theme filk.

:) You'll do really well, Terrence. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Excellent! We're hoping to be there to butter you up ... or is that jam your sensors ... or no, I can't come up with a marmite pun.

Preserve that thought.
