We did that once back then - why can't we do that again?

Frakking Toaster

By now, some of you may have heard that I'll be the Toastmaster for next year's GAFilk. I couldn't make it this year because I had to choose between going back to the South and attending the British filkcon, but [livejournal.com profile] autographedcat asked me if I wanted to take the role for 2010 and I was more than happy to... I'd have been there anyway, guest or no.

So, see y'all there. Now, if someone can only tell me what a Toastmaster is supposed to do...

[Obit] Forry Ackerman is Dead, Alas

Forrest J Ackerman, 1916-2008 )

It all began October 1926 when a little nine-year-old me was standing in front of a newsstand and the Hugo Gernsback magazine "Amazing Stories" jumped off the newsstand, grabbed hold of me and - most people are too young to know, but in those days magazines spoke - and that one said "take me home little boy. You will love me!" And everything grew from that.

My only encounter with Forry was eight years ago at Chicon 2000. I was in the Dealer's Room browsing (as you do) when I saw someone passing by out of the corner of my eye. I turned to give him room, and there he was - I recognised him from photos I'd seen before and was dumbstruck: here was Forrest J. Ackerman! The Forrest J Ackerman!

He looked at me, smiling, I stared back goggle-eyed at him, and the moment must have gone on a tad too long, because he then broke it by extending his hand and offering me a copy of his newsletter. I took it and finally had the presence of mind to stammer out a request for his autograph, which he graciously gave.

That incident (along with an encounter with Harry Harrison in the Green Room) prompted the writing of my signature song, Fanboy Soul.

Green Blues

A song by my friend [livejournal.com profile] bardiclug, who worked on the new Incredible Hulk video game from Sega that ties in with the new movie. Now, how cool is that?

So you think you know the Pegasus Awards...

Meme going around the filkers on LJ: 259 songs have been nominated for a Pegasus Award — how many have you heard/sung along to/sung? [livejournal.com profile] maverick_weirdo is to blame for the initial concept.

If you have heard the song put it in Italics.
If you have sung along to it in public (or at least the chorus) put it in Underline.
If you have sung it (in public, all the words, with people looking at you) put it in Bold.

And here we go... )

Mom's Overture

A bit late for Mother's Day, but...

What a Mom says in a 24-hour period compressed to under 3 minutes, by Anita Renfroe, to the tune of the William Tell Overture.

[Obit] Lois Mangan

By way of [livejournal.com profile] persis, Lois Mangan has just passed away. No other details as yet.

I knew Lois, but wasn't that close to her; hugs and sympathies to her friends and loved ones.

ETA: More here.

NEW SONG: Leap of Faith (1st draft)

1st draft, really, and right now the tune is a little high for my own voice. A bit nervous and wary about the whole thing because it's the first original song I've written for nearly 4 years. Comments welcome.

All the questions left unanswered as you take the final dive. )

2008 Pegasus Awards Brainstorming

Looking at the floating categories for this year's Pegasus Awards, "Comedy" and "Tragedy" (as opposed to "Comedy and Tragedy" which might have been more interesting...), it occurred to me that I'm not precisely sure into which category "When I Was A Boy *Sob*" might fall...

Donating to Greg's family

This will be probably on a lot of other filkers' sites, but one more won't hurt. Greg's brother has set up Paypal donation buttons for those who wish to contribute to Maya in this time of urgent need.

Please read the instructions carefully as there are two buttons, one for Paypal balance funded donations and one for credit card funded ones. If in doubt, go for the credit card button.

[Obit] filkergem

We've lost Greg McMullan.

I'm still stunned. All of us are. I last saw him and Maya a couple of weeks ago at GAFilk. We shared a room, and I had dinner with them and the Glassers at the Steak & Ale on Sunday night. The last I saw of them was Monday morning when we sorted out the check-out arrangements.

Greg was good people. Maya and him have been one of the sweetest couple of people I ever met. I remember them asking my permission to use "The Rest of Forever" at their wedding way back when, and when I started getting into baseball, Maya sent me her son's old mitt together with a baseball. I've never been close to them in any special way, but I adored Greg just the same, and my heart both breaks and goes out to Maya at this time.

I just wish I could be geographically closer right now. I'm sure people will be rallying up funds and support... I only hope I'll be kept posted for anything I can do at all, even from over here.

GAFilk, Day Three

Sunday morning, and I'm dressed in my traditional Sunday shirt and listening to the Eucemenifilk while surfing the net in a corner of the main filk room. Closing ceremonies in about an hour and a half, but there's still the Dead Dog, although not everyone I hoped would be hanging around are (boo!). Need. More. Coffee.

Marching through Georgia

Safely in Atlanta, after a journey halfway around the world that took 24 hours, 30 minutes. Or thereabouts. Lots of people already here, lots of hugs going about. Had dinner at the Alien Waffle House™ — hash browns, with onions, peppers, mushrooms and diced ham, and a glass of sweet tea — ah, the South.

More people, more music, and more hugs tomorrow, I'm sure. But for now... sleep. I'll tell you about Northwest Airlines at some point. Didn't exactly suck, but it wasn't all that great either.

24 hours (give or take) to Atlanta

Gate opens in about 10 minutes. Desperately in need of caffeine, but I'm holding off because I plan to slip into a coma quite rapidly upon settling into my seat.

See y'all soon.

Impending GAFilk 2008

Got my hotel room for GAFIlk from January 10-13. I'm more than happy to have people crash/room share (well, pending the usual screening procedures for psychosis and so on, of course), so let me know.
