I can see right through you

khaosworksNo thoughts as I watched - this time I wanted to concentrate on Hoshi. Mmm. Hoshi. However, a few remarks...
Okay, so it's "The Next Phase" meets Alice In Wonderland. I thought it was a waste of time, myself - yes, Linda Park did amazingly with the material, and made me love her even more (and Hoshi in a tanktop didn't hurt either... grrrowl), and Connor Trineer put in some great moments as the dream Trip.
It's also interesting, if you take the premise it was all in her head, to try to psychoanalyze her relationships with the rest of the crew: T'Pol being overly critical and dismissive of her; Archer thinking she's not up to the task; The boys' club (Reed, Mayweather and Tucker) ignoring her... her general insecurity in thinking that people don't notice her or listen to her, and in her dream state, the only two people that she interacted more or less positively with were Phlox and Trip, which kind of shows you who she's closer to. She's also noticed Trip's protectiveness of her, which is a red flag to any of you Sato/Tucker shippers.
But... and this is a big but.
Like any writer, I hate stories that end on "It was all a dream." It kind of makes you think you've wasted any emotional investment in the last hour or so, and it's just an easy out. What really pisses me off is that it didn't need to be that way. Hoshi's trip through the alien transporter could have reintegrated her properly and she could have gone on to save the day - the dream inconsistencies (the Bridge scene) could have been written out of the script and apart from those bits, people weren't really out of character. Yes, it would have been a rehash of "The Next Phase" but it's a hell of a lot better than having the dream cop out.
If I become a teacher and ever get a student giving me an English composition ending with the words, "It was all a dream," or words to that effect, I'm going to get them to write me another story, this time beginning with the words, "It was all a dream."
In short, okay episode, good acting, but for the ending just ruined it. C-.
