Yesterday is Here
Dec. 16th, 2002 08:02 pmI got the CD "The Magic of Inspector Morse" in the post today. I've always loved Barrington Pheloung's Inspector Morse theme - its melancholy, graceful progression with the too, too clever use of the morse code M-O-R-S-E as its introductory melody and rhythm. I start playing the CD and am greeted with "Yesterday Is Here", an amazing rendition of the Morse theme as a jazz torch song, with lyrics by Don Black and sultry vocals by Pat Treacy. Coupled with the fact that it's a tribute to Morse after he dies in his last story, "The Remorseful Day" and that John Thaw, the man who made me a Morse fan through his magnificent portrayal of the hard-drinking detective, crossword-puzzle solving, opera-loving, always morose and always alone save for his faithful Sergeant Lewis, died this February as well... let's just say I'm a complete sap as usual and by the middle of the song I'm on the verge of crying like a baby.
Inspector Morse fans need to get this album, just for this song alone.
( Lyrics follow, but they don't do justice to the full effect of the song. )
