Back in the South
Mar. 9th, 2005 12:45 amI'm not quite home yet - I'm writing this from
autographedcat and
kitanzi's place. I was supposed to get into Atlanta Hartsfield at 9 pm and then catch the 9.45 pm shuttle to Athens, but about an hour away from landing, two of the plane's generators decided to pack it in and the pilot decided to land in Memphis, TN to see what was up. We sat there while mechanics looked it over and it turned out to be a low oil problem, for which we waited some more until it was fixed.
So by the time I got into Hartsfield it was 11 pm, and the shuttle was long gone. I grabbed a burger from Wendy's, which was one of only two food places still open, and got my bags. There was a moment of panic when I saw the empty carousel, but a helpful porter pointed out that some of the Delta bags had come through on another carousel and had been put in left luggage. Thankfully, tracking that down was quite rapid, and I headed to the MARTA station.
While in Memphis, I'd already more or less figured out that missing the shuttle was a real possibility, so I called
autographedcat to see if I could get a ride up to Alpharetta and a place to sleep for the night. Coincidentally,
gallamor was there as well, so he came to pick me up from North Springs station, which I reached at about 1 am.
So here I am. And have to figure out how to get back to Athens tomorrow. And that's the saga of my trip home. I'll talk more about Consonance, I promise, and how I became the proud owner of a Google T-shirt.
