Stargate SG-1 this week was okay, and enjoyable, but Atlantis's mid-season finale knocked it right out of the park. Pretty much character driven, it was a great episode in a great series and had everything that I love about the show and the cast so much, even over their parent series. The feeling of family, and of Atlantis as home, has never been more palpable, which is why it hurt so much to watch the first half hour of this episode, and to see the effects it had on our merry crew.
So many cute and touching character moments:
When the Lanteans are telling the Atlantis expedition to piss off, I was saying, "This is bullshit, man! Bullshit!" to the screen. Fanfic has said it so many times, but it's true. After a point, Earth just isn't home anymore for these people. Atlantis is a place they've put blood and sweat and tears into, and created a family they love. They just can't be forced to give that up without a fight. It's not right.
Weir's face falling when she finds out that she's not going to be staying behind. Elizabeth's connection to the city has never been explored much, but it's there: after all, she was first through the gate, in another lifetime spent 10,000 years watching over the city. It's appropriate that she's the last to leave, and also logical that, after her experiences in "The Real World", that the fact that this separation is really happening would plunge her into depression.
Ronon bodily lifting John off the floor. I was hoping for John to at least hug Teyla, not that I'm that sort of 'shipper, but still...
Carson tearing up while trying to say how much he'll miss everyone; Rodney spoiling it as usual.
Rodney acting like someone giving last minute instructions to the babysitter about Atlantis. "Now, this is her favourite food, and her favourite story when you tuck her in... oh, and don't forget that Mr. Cuddles needs to be right next to her pillow."
"Certain people who I miss..." "Me?" "You? You I'm talking on the phone to right now and having dinner with tomorrow, so... not so much." Hee.
Carson not taking no for an answer when dragging Weir out to dinner.
The World of Warcraft moment, however, was painful, on so many levels.
Stealing the Enterprise... uh, the puddle jumper, and getting the band back together. Sheppard may be in a world of trouble when he gets back to Earth, but really, do any of them want to go back anymore?
The sheer logic of the Genii seeking out Ronan and Teyla now that the Ancients are back, the Tau'ri are gone and the Ancestors don't seem to give a shit about the Wraith. Good to see the writers thinking here.
"They emit a directional energy beam that disrupts the connection between nanites." "Not what I asked." "... Yes, they 'work good'." Ha!
And finally: "I'll be damned if I let a bunch of Replicators take our home away from us."
Damn straight.
