Striking a nerve
Sep. 13th, 2001 07:48 amI seem to have done so with putting up my little excerpt from Sorkin on rec.music.filk - people responded, variously, about how vengeance and justice are not mutually exclusive and how if Sorkin were in charge after Pearl Harbor, America would be part of Japan.
To which I say, I'm just as angry as you are, guys, but for Christ's sake get a grip. You've read my earlier posts, you know how horribly angry I was, and how angry I still am at these bastards. My heart cries out for vengeance no less than yours, but all I'm saying is, there's a line here. The line may be very fine, but the line is there, and we should sit back while the healing is going on and decide for ourselves which side of the line we want to come down on.
Part of me agrees with Bartlet, and part of me agrees with Leo. I think both sides have their points. Who do you want to be? Does the world wish to wipe out terrorism because terrorism is evil, or just because America got blindsided? Motives matter.
I'm not advocating apeasement. If I were in Bush's position, Bin Laden and Afghanistan would probably be so much dust right now, and damn whether he was really behind it or not. I'm just not sure I'd have pushed the button for the right reasons.
I just never, ever, want to strike back in anger. I want to strike only because it's the right thing to do.
