I finished watching the pilot for Enterprise, last night. Not bad, actually - I was worried about how they could make modern day effects still look retro when compared to the original series and they've managed to do a decent job at it. Trek pilots have this odd tendency to be good in inverse proportion to the series to follow. Take "The Cage", which was overly cerebral but led to a great original series. Or "Encounter at Farpoint" which sucked incredibly but The Next Generation that followed was worth it. Or "Emissary", which did not reflect anything of the potential or epic quality of the Deep Space Nine saga. And "Caretaker", which was a kick ass pilot for the series Voyager which ultimately sucked ass.

So how does this measure up? Well, it wasn't quite as good as Caretaker but more compelling than Emissary, so I guess that means the series has a good chance of not sucking as badly as Voyager did.

I wish the theme song was better, though. Ick.

I read several interviews, articles, etc, about _Enterprise_, and it basically sounded as if the Powers That Be intend it to be Star Trek that would appeal to people other than those *lame* *stupid* *ridiculous* *Trekkies*. One of the actors bragged about never having seen the "Trek bible", for instance.

I'm not sure I want to watch a prequel that so explicitly intends to disregard its sequels, or a show whose creators despise so many of the fans they know they already have. And, well, the first episode, aside of a few moments (such as the first scene with the adorable xenolinguist you mention in another entry) made me twitch.

But, then, I was never much for Classic Trek, so I'm already a heretic. :)

I'm so rudely interrupting your posting because I got bored and hit the random link and came upon your journal. I have not had a chance to view any of the Enterprise offerings, which greatly disappoints me. I was spoon fed TNG because my father had been a TOS fan. I watched faithfully and wouldn't miss one episode. I guess that makes me quite the Trekkie (oops. I won't tell you about the shrine in my house). I didn't like DS9 because, well, the pilot was horrible and I couldn't bring myself to watch it after crying for hours over All Good Things...

I grew up and got a job and college degree. I didn't have time to watch Voyager and from what I hear I'm not missing much. Now I wish I had time for Enterprise because my blood is craving some more stimulation.

Anyway, there's really no point to this other than I really appreciate people who understand all things Trek.

Oh, you're very welcome. You really should have given Deep Space Nine a try - it got really good once it got into the third season or so. The dysfunctional family there was much more interesting than Picard's perfect crew.

The thing about the DS9 pilot is that after the series ended, I went back to watch it again and I found it much better than I remembered - primarily because now I could see the whole arc, how things changed so radically for the characters over the seven years. Who would have thought that Ferengi street urchin kid would become the a Starfleet officer and a war veteran? Or that superbitch Kira would finally put on a Starfleet uniform at the end? Or wannabe hero Bashir would have such a dark secret in his past, or that Odo would be the key to the destruction or the salvation of the Alpha Quadrant? Or that those simple words, "The Prophets await you," to Sisko... he had no idea how true those words would be, or the portents and pain waiting for him and his crew. I was just watching it and going, "Christ, you guys don't know half the shit you're in for in the next 7 years..."

And the best thing was, neither did we.

Can't wait for it to be released on DVD.
