The call came over the frequencies the Commissioner had convinced City Hall to set aside for me. It was more reliable than a communications device, and it saved me the trouble of paying attention to every little screech over the police band. Demoniac's uniformed troops had suddenly materialized in the middle of Downtown and started doing property damage - blowing up cars, demolishing shop fronts.
It looked bad. The Special Weapons Unit had been despatched to the area but Demoniac's men looked like they were packing some serious hardware this time around, probably the new beta particle accelerators he was bragging about the last time I went up against him. There had been no time for an orderly evacuation. As jaded and used to catastrophic events like these, the citizenry were startled at the randomness of this new attack, and what was now a panicked rush was about to explode into a full scale riot.
I took all this in, a combination of the Commissioner barking at me, his voice slightly high-pitched in his anxiety, multiple sweeps with my hypersenses of the police chatter and assessing the situation as I saw it from ten thousand feet up. I swooped in towards the center of the rampage, noting thankfully that nobody had been seriously hurt yet. Demoniac's men actually seemed to be going out of their way not to hurt anybody - firing over the heads of the people, limiting their fire onto inanimate objects.
And Demoniac... Cousin Howard himself was nowhere in sight.
I sighed softly to myself. For Christ's sake, Howie, this kind of distraction didn't work when we were eight years old, why the Hell do you think it'd work now?
