My tour of duty as Field Coroner for the month of August starts, well, now, really. For the next month, every morning I will go down to the morgue to view people who have died of unnatural or unknown causes the night before, watch grieving families identify the bodies and sign off on post-mortems for those that need to be autopsied to discover why they died. I've done this before, a couple of years ago - so it's nothing new. I'm normally quite stoic when it comes to corpses, but when I see a kid, I can't help thinking what about the sheer potential that's gone to waste. Wonder where it all goes.

I don't normally watch "Code Blue" and other medical emergency shows like that on TV, but one was on that caught my eye the other night. A teen (18 years old) had been shot in the neck by some other kid who had it out for him. He was pretty much brain-dead from the time they brought him to the hospital, and they kept his body alive long enough for them to harvest his organs. The show highlighted his parents and their saying goodbye to him, and I couldn't even fathom having to see my son/daughter dead on a bed in front of me. Yeah, it's bad when almost anyone dies, but I agree, there's something even worse about kids, even teenagers. What have they left undone?

"I see dead people."

Well, actually I won't be able to do this job, knowing that every day there is a collection of cadavers waiting for me at the office. Someone has to do it I suppose but they should offer extra pay for doing it.
