I weep for you.

But hey, it's your country.

Ain't democracy wonderful?

I hate it when I open the morning paper and the best thing I can say about the above-the-fold headlines is 'not my fault, not my fault, not my fault'....

I voted Democrat for all the available positions on the local ballot save the Town Council, where the Dems weren't running anybody - hell, not even the Natural Law people were running anyone for Town Council, so in a fit of irritation I wrote in my father's name and my sister's. At least Lautenberg won.

However, if things get truly ucky, I may have to go up to the ROM to see that nifty keen-oh box that's possibly archaeological evidence of Yeshua bin Yusuf's family structure as described in the synoptic Gospels, and then casually forget where I put the tickets home. You know how it goes.

Who was it who said, "In a democracy, the people get the government they deserve"?

And why do *I* have to share with *them*??

(I wrote in a neighbor for school committee, because the awful rep from our area was unopposed; otherwise, I actually had some decent candidates to vote *for* ... and a fair number of them even won. But nationwide ... I don't want to think about it!)

Don't know, but I've seen it attributed to Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Alexis de Tocqueville, and Hunter S Thompson, but most of the time that it's mentioned, it's unattributed. It's a simple, powerful insight, though, which would explain why it's so often repeated (with or without attribution to some famous person known for having suitably similar views).

Another quote (this one with a more established source):

"Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard." --H L Mencken, A Little Book in C Major, p 19 (1916) [Also in A Mencken Chrestomathy (1949)]

The next two years, at least, will likely show the truth of this assertion, in spades.

I'm an Election Night junkie, particularly for Canadian and American elections, so I sat and watched CNN for a couple of hours last night as I cross-stitched, but it was depressing, oh, so depressing...

It isn't my fault either; I voted.

Oddly enough, the Democrats won heavily in California (my state).
