After Iraq, Bush will attack his real target
One poignant photo said it all: Georgia's defeated Democratic senator, Max Cleland, sitting in a wheelchair, missing both legs and an arm lost in combat in Vietnam. This highly decorated hero was defeated by a Vietnam war draft-dodger who had the audacity to accuse Cleland of being "unpatriotic" after the senator courageously voted against giving Bush unlimited war-related powers. I do not recall a more shameful moment in American politics.

Being one of those "represented" by Cleland I would feel remiss if I didn't point out the blatent left bias of that article you quoted. I assume it could actually be from an op-ed piece instead of legitimate news but based on the press' coverage of Democrats lately it wouldn't shock me if that were from "an unbiased journalistic piece covering both sides". I was trying to gather why the Democrats are being so vocal that this literally seems like the end of the world to them; that the Republicans are baby-eating monsters who only want to bring about Armagaeddon. I honestly think that the media is helping to paint that picture. To specifically address the Senator in question; from the day Max Cleland was elected to the Senate, he has done so very little to represent the views of Georgians. He would up taking in more campaign donations from special interests that any other Senator from Georgia I believe (if I recall reading that right but don't quote me as I cannot recall the source). He voted strictly along party lines and not once did he hold a single rally or forum here in Georgia to gather opinion. His opponent was the only Republican candidate I voted for because I felt unrepresented by Cleland and figured that the worst that could happen would be Saxby Chamblis wound up doing the same thing. If that's the case then in 6 years I'll work to vote Saxby out too until we get somebody who actually represents the people of Georgia and not their affiliated political party.

As another of Clelands constituents, I'm going to miss him, and the thought of Saxby Chambliss as Senator makes my stomach turn. I remember his last campaign ad, in which his grandkid said "vote for mah big daddy for senator!" to which Saxby said "now how are you gonna say no to that?" "Like this," I thought, as I pushed the screen next the Cleland's name.
Of course, that's still better than governor elect Sonny Perdue saying "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty, we are free at last."

It was an all-time low for me...

As another person in that neighborhood, I'm really hating this. Saxby Chamblis, anti-choice, conservative, pro-NRA, good-hair guy. Over Max. One of the few politicians in Georgia of whom we could be proud.

And Chamblis rode in on the coattails of 'W', no less. I don't get it! This is Dubya we're talking about! Not Einstein, or Gandhi, or Disraeli, or anything remotely close to having brains and ethics and statesmanship. Yet this president has the highest approval rating since they started tracking such things. It stymies the mind... (shaking head and praying the next four years go by fast.)
