Springer considers political future

US talk show host Jerry Springer is considering standing for Senate in the US state of Ohio.

He said he will decide by the summer whether he will challenge George Voinovich, the Republican incumbent who is running for his second term in 2004.

And people wonder why I got out of the satire writing business.

Didn't Springer used to be in pollitics before the talk show gig started? My memory is foggy.

He was mayor of Cincy back in the late 70's/early 80's. Back when he paid for a hooker with a personal check.

You know, even Springer would be an improvement over Voinovich.

Actually I'm most amused by the thought of him going back into politics because he's said a couple of times that now people are always happy to see him/talk to him/have him around. He's the host of a TV show that often reveals to people how messed up their lives are... and yet people treat him nicely. I've seen it several times when watching the TV show for my dose of 'hey, at least my life isn't /that/ bad'. People in mid-tirade or who have just watched their lives fall apart will stop and be polite and nice to him. When he was mayor he regularly got death threats. He used to say this was why he'd never go back into politics, he couldn't take the animosity. All of which is a pretty sad comment on our world. That said... I think he probably is a better choice than many other politicians. He's often got a good perspective and he doesn't bother to hide his smarmy side and he's got less of one than most people would have you believe.
