Lady Come Down
lyrics based on "Serenade" by Oscar Wilde
music by Charlie Mole
(from "The Importance of Being Earnest", 2002)

Algy: After you, dear boy.
Jack: No, after you.
Algy: No, no, you go first, I'm not really good at the high bits. Much better low.
Jack: Well, we'll see.
Algy: One, two, and...

The western wind is blowing fair
Across the dark Ægean sea,
And at the secret marble stair
My Tyrian galley waits for thee.
Come down! the purple sail is spread,
The watchman sleeps within the town,
O leave thy lily-flowered bed,
O Lady mine come down, come down!

    Come down! Lady come down!
    Come down! Lady come down!
    O Lady come down!

She will not come, I know her well,
Of lover's vows she hath no care,
And little good a man can tell
Of one so cruel and so fair.
True love is but a woman's toy,
They never know the lover's pain,
And I who loved as loves a boy
Must love in vain, must love in vain.

    Come down! Lady come down!
    Come down! Lady come down!

Jack: I think your high notes might have damaged our chances, old boy. You do want them to come down, don't you?
Algy: But she's never to come down if you're singing like that, you're completely out of tune.
Jack: How dare you!
Algy: I'll take this bit.
Jack: You'll leave this to me. You go and have a lie-down, old man.
Algy: I'll take this bit.
Jack: Out of my way! I'm coming through!
Algy: Go easy, my dear fellow.

    COME DDDOOOWWWNNN!!!!

Algy: Told you, less is more.

    Come down. Lady come down.

Jack: That wasn't so bad, was it?
Algy: They're not going to come down. You think we should go up? Maybe we should go up.
Jack: Algy, you're always talking nonsense.
Algy: Well, it's better than listening to it.

Jack: Lady come down...
Algy: Dooby, dooby, dooby, doo...

I love this song! I was humming it for days after I watched it. Loved the movie too. I thought the casting for Jack and Algy was just perfect.

This is a good song, and it fitted with the style of the movie. That said, it wasn't the best adaptation I have seen! I much preferred An Ideal Husband done a few years ago. I found the Greco-fantasy stuff a bit strange, and would probably have preferred the film without it.,

OK, now I need to hear this. :)

While I'm commenting....The other day [livejournal.com profile] tigerbright was playing music and when we came to "Terrorists Ate My Homework" I fell off my chair. I just thought I'd tell you that.

:)
