The graphics card on Cassandra, my Powerbook, has died. I hope it can be repaired, replaced or at least the hard drive data retrieved. What really sucks is that about a weeks' worth of work is in the damn drive and I can't get at it or transfer it out. Shit.

My sympathies.

If it's just the graphics card, you ought to be able to find someone to just copy the data across to another drive or download it to CDs or some other medium. Or just fix the blasted thing.

Luck.

How can he see to do that if the graphics card is gone?

Could just slave the hard-drive to a working computer, as a peripheral, and access it from there, no? That's how I've seen it done.

Is it called Cassandra because it constantly fortells the future, but none listen? :)

Pretty much. Seemed appropriate for a Macintosh, since we Mac people are usually in the same position.

Do you have remote login enabled? Then you can just ssh into the book and ftp all your data out. Or do you want me to take a look at it and see what I can do?

Hi,

If its just the graphics chip, then it should not be a problem to remove the hard drive, connect it up to another mac and transfer the vital files out.

I symphatize as it can be a real inconvenient PITA to have your computer die on you suddenly. As I recall, your Powerbook is only a year or so old right? Hopefully its still under warranty and you can get it serviced.

Wish you luck in retrieving your files.

Hrm, does your powerbook have a VGA out? Does that work?

It has a VGA out, but remember, that signal is routed through the video card - it doesn't bypass it. That's how I figured out it was the card rather than the LCD screen that was the problem.

Tough luck...

...but look on the bright side : an excuse to buy a new 12" or 17"? I bought a 12" and it has changed my (Mac) life!

Your best bet is to buy a cheap external HD case, and get the shop to dig your harddisk out and put it in there...the cases are less than $200.
