Bad Timing
Lyrics and Music © 2003 Terence Chua

So this is what it's like
He whispered to himself
When timing goes a little bit awry

For when she fell in love
He left her on the shelf
He didn't feel the same and didn't give a reason why
    She didn't wait forever
Even though he thought he could
And he didn't seize the moment
    Even though inside he knew
That all these precious moments should
So when he turned around
She'd already taken flight
It seemed a waste of strength to even cry
    So it goes
    Fingers write
    The tragedy, the comedy
    Of people standing still
    Passing ships
    In the night
    The what-ifs and the maybes
That would happen if we only had the chances or the will
Once there was a boy
Searching for the perfect girl
So he turned the ones who didn't fit away

And when he found the one
The one in all the world
She was looking for her perfect man
So there really wasn't anything to say
He went away
    So it goes
    Truth to tell
    We never recognize the prize
    But look back in dismay
    And we blame
    God or Hell
    For teaching us the language
When these curses are the only things we ever learned to say
So open up those eyes
And take a look around
There may be someone looking back at you

But not for long

This reads beautifully. Are we going to get to hear it soon?

More curious WHO it is about...anyone I know? Or would that be telling?

It doesn't have to be about anybody. It's just a love song. The situation described in it is pretty much universal, I think. It's happened to me, I've seen it happen to other people. The parable of the man looking for the perfect woman is one I've been using as an object lesson since the mid-80s.

Er, ships passing?/the Tragical Comedie of you know who? The highlight, and the one that should be a reference but isn't, is the line about language and curses - very nice. We shoot Chris for prurient interest, which of course I do not share at all. J.

Well, I think the literary references are to "The moving finger writes, and having writ moves on" and "Like two ships that pass in the night"

But I haven't a clue where these phrases originated.

Oh, I like :)
Funny how you posted this just a short while after my "Warte Nicht/don't wait" lyric excerpt posting the other day... so, yeah... have the courage to grab your chances, don't let 'em slip by into regret.

As for the references, I'm quite often hopeless at such things, and in this case I do not spot them. *hugs*
