No, I'm not kidding. I'm watching it now - "The Terror Beyond", guest starring Aquaman, Solomon Grundy and Dr Fate.

Except they pronounce it "Ik-Thool-Too," and the Old Ones turn out to have been worshipped by the Thanagarians. Still, very cool.

"Birdnose help Grundy! But birdnose's friends hate Grundy!"

"Grundy help birdnose, birdnose help Grundy, okay? Now if you'll excuse me, Hawkgirl smash."

My boyfriend and my housemate looked over my shoulder as I read this. Nathan said, "oh, look!" Chris answered, "Heh, a portrait of Lovecraft." The title was scrolled off the page, so they didn't even have that to tip them off. Why am I living with two people who immediately recognize HP Lovecraft's visage?

As my roomies can tell you, I cried out "It's Cthulhu!" the moment I saw the tentacled skull appear in the sky. And got a great laugh when Dr. Fate uttered the dread name. :)

Since you didn't mention it, I'll assume you also missed the other big in-joke in the eps (pointed out on r.a.c. by Hal Shipman).

OK, you've got Solomon Grundy fighting a bunch of soldiers led by Thunderbolt Ross' previously unknown twin brother and saying "smash", "bird-nose", and "dumb magician". He's teamed up with Dr. Fate (magician) and Aquaman (Atlantean royalty).

In other words, we just saw a Justice League/Defenders crossover.

Ah. I missed most of the first part - I didn't see Grundy fighting the soldiers, not did I hear Grundy refer to Fate as "dumb magician". Not that I would have twigged on to the Defenders in-joke, but in my defence, I wasn't exposed to all the clues. :-)
