Back in Athens
Jul. 21st, 2004 11:21 amGot back last night, after the usual nightmare flight - from Singapore to Heathrow, switching to Gatwick (turns out the bus fare wasn't included... had to catch a National Express for £15... took about an hour from airport to airport) for the flight to Atlanta. Getting through customs and immigration was a new experience... after I got fingerprinted and had my picture taken by the stereotypically humorless immigration official, I had to get my luggage from the carousel, clear customs, and then... and this is the new bit... put my luggage back on a conveyer belt and go through another x-ray/security check of my hand carried baggage before I got to the other carousels near the entrance of the airport to get my baggage again.
Got back to my apartment around 9.00 pm, to find it relatively intact, but wet and smelly and horrifyingly mildewy. Need to do lots of cleaning and Lysol-ing, change the sheets, dump bad food from the refrigerator, etc. Worst of all, my cable and internet access is dead and isn't coming back until they can send someone around to check on the digital box. Apparently, leaving it unplugged for two months is a bad thing.
So how am I typing this? I'm on campus, wirelessly connected at the Tate Student Center, downloading and clearing e-mail and trying to feel connected to the world again. I'm glad to be back, really, just that it feels a bit lonesome again, especially without 'net access and/or cable. Still, got my DVDs to keep me amused, and can continue devouring Simon Schama's "A History of Britain" trilogy. But if any of you are in the neighborhood or feel like giving me a call, please, feel free.
