Bush Campaign Defends Ads With 9/11 Images
Thu Mar 4,10:07 AM ET
NEW YORK - President Bush's re-election campaign on Thursday defended commercials using images from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, including wreckage of the World Trade Center, as appropriate for an election about public policy and the war on terror.

Some families of the victims of the attacks are angry with Bush for airing the spots, which they called in poor taste and for the president's political gain.

"With all due respect, I just completely disagree, and I believe the vast majority of the American people will as well," Karen Hughes, a Bush campaign adviser, told "The Early Show" on CBS. "September 11th was not just a distant tragedy. It's a defining event for the future of our country. ... Obviously, all of us mourn and grieve for the victims of that terrible day, but September 11 fundamentally changed our public policy in many important ways, and I think it's vital that the next president recognize that."

The first three ads, unveiled Wednesday at campaign headquarters in suburban Washington, will run on broadcast channels in about 80 markets in 18 states, most of which are expected to be critical to the election, and nationwide on select cable networks.

"It's a slap in the face of the murders of 3,000 people," Monica Gabrielle, whose husband died in the twin towers, told the New York Daily News for its Thursday editions. "It is unconscionable."

Two of the spots show the destruction at the World Trade Center and include an American flag flying amid the debris. They also feature images of firefighters working through the wreckage.

"It's as sick as people who stole things out of the place," said Firefighter Tommy Fee of Queens Rescue Squad 270. "The image of firefighters at ground zero should not be used for this stuff, for politics."
Oh, Karen Hughes is so on my list now. Translation: "We don't care - 9/11 is a emotional hot button and we're going to push it for all it's worth and turn that despair into votes, so fuck you if you don't like us parading your loved ones' deaths in front of your face."

To repeat what I said in April, when the 9/11 strategy was first revealed - "Why doesn't Bush just drench himself in ashes from Ground Zero while dressed in nothing but an American Flag, parading the head of Chemical Ali around and shouting, 'WHO'S YOUR DADDY?' Same difference, really."

Maybe we should run those ads but with a new narration track - "Remember this? The Bush administration fucked up and let it happen..."

I doubt that the (hypothetical) Gore administration could have prevented 9/11 either, but I'm lacking the cross-time machine that would allow me to do the appropriate random sampling.

I expect that Kerry will eventually be running ads that deal with dead Americans and Iraqis -- at which time, the Republicans will emote over those and the Democrats will ask "What's the problem?"

But I have low expectations.

Just my opinion.

Apparently there was in fact a fair amount of intelligence evidence that had been accumulated both before and after the Bush takeover of the White House (by a few judicial activists interpreting the law the way they wanted to but that's neither here nor there right now), evidence that was routinely ignored by the Bush administration. If the evidence had been acted upon 9/11 might have been put off, reduced or even possibly completely prevented. I don't know the probability of each of those, nor the probability of 9/11 still happening with Gore in office; but given that Gore would have followed in Clinton's footsteps and the Clinton administration had this kind of intelligence on top priority, I do think 9/11 would have at least been less likely with Gore at the helm.

Of course, alternate realities don't currently mean diddly to this one, except as occasionally good media for us to ponder. (I'm currently going through H Beam Piper's Paratime)

According to the March 2004 issue of "Mother Jones", -one_ day after Shrub was sworn in as putative President, his cohorts began their campaign to move on Iraq! While they may not have had a hand in setting up the 9/11 tragedy, the Bushites seized upon it as justification for anything and everything they did from then onward.

When psychopaths are in charge of national policy-making, they will let _nothing_ deter them from charging obsessively toward their 'God-given' goals ~~ not honor, decency, respect for the anguish of fellow country men and women, truth, or the possible consequences of being found out in their lying and manipulating.

Please continue with your hot pursuit of wrongdoing, friend, or those slimy monomaniacs may yet pull off another term. If they do, America may never be able to recover!

Do you remember what was the Grand Moff Tarkin's reaction to this proposition?

"We have analyzed the defenses, and there is a danger ..."

Oh, I wish I had been sitting next to Karen Hughes on one of those TV shows yesterday. "Oh, it's a legitimate issue, Ms. Hughes, but I don't agree with what you're saying about the American people. You're saying that Americans can't recognize or discuss the issue of terrorism without seeing the horrific images from 9/11. You're saying that Americans are stupid."

it's the idea of these people like karen hughes that because they're in a position of power, they can invoke walter lippman's idea that nobody except those in the specialized class knows what they want really from the world.

i stick up my middle finger defiantly against the lippman followers of the world.

Not sure if this is old news chez toi, but I came across this interesting rant on another Shrub campaign missive masquerading as a letter from Joe Q. Letter plus discussion had long US-military-history discourse, and of course I thought of you:
