Social Conservatives Win 5-Year Unborn Victims Fight
Opponents Fear Precedent Of Giving Mom, Fetus Equal Legal Status

WASHINGTON -- A five-year battle touching on the abortion debate has ended with a victory for those seeking to expand the legal rights of the unborn.

By a vote of 61-38, the Senate has passed the Unborn Victims of Violence Act, sending the bill to President George W. Bush, who is expected to sign it.

The bill applies only to federal crimes, such as the drug trade or acts on federal land, such as military bases. In those cases, the legislation would make violence against a pregnant woman two separate crimes -- one harming the woman and another against her unborn child.

Opponents say the real significance of the bill is that it gives a fetus the same legal status as the mother -- something they see as a dangerous precedent.

The White House and other backers of the bill say they strongly support protection for the unborn.
Crap. Better start watching abortion rights issues a lot more closely, guys.

Coincidentally, in the mail today was a solicitation for donations from "March of Women's Lives" - they got my address from the ACLU (yeah, I joined up). They're planning a demonstration in Washington D.C. on April 25 - more details at http://www.marchforwomen.org if you're interested.

Already know about it (my congregation's sending buses), but thanks! Better to get such info twice than not at all.
