Old Friends
Lyrics and Music by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel

Old friends - old friends
Sat on their parkbench like bookends
A newspaper blown through the grass
Falls on the round toes
Of the high shoes
Of the old friends

Old friends - winter companions, the old men
Lost in their overcoats waiting for the sunset
The sounds of the city sifting through trees
Settles like dust
On the shoulders
Of the old friends

Can you imagine us years from today
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange to be seventy

Old friends - memory brushes the same years
Silently sharing the same fears

Actually, to me, the thought of sharing park benches quietly is a lovely one ... and I hope to be able to do that when I'm old.

I've always heard this one as a nostalgic combination of satisfaction AND regret. Some regret at not being young anymore, but glad to have friends.

Um, did you know that today's Harlan Ellison's 70th birthday?

No, I didn't! Too late to send him a birthday card, I suppose.
