This is really for people in the National University of Singapore... specifically, [livejournal.com profile] deadspeaker and [livejournal.com profile] thewonkyone. Are the wi-fi hotspots at the NUS Library open to the public to use? And can people go into the library to read (if not borrow) books?

(planning to do a spot of research...)

I need to do research at the NUS Library itself, which is why I was asking.

I think you can use the wi-fi on campus. See here for information about setting up and whatnot.

About the library, technically speaking, you can't go in without a membership card; but the librarians aren't always that anal about that. I'll be making a trip to the library next week and, if you want to, we can meet up and I can bring you in. As for borrowing, you definitely can't do that without a NUS card. Hope this helps. :)

There are three items I'd like to look at - a book on the Philippine War, a book on a massacre that took place during that war on the island of Samar, and a monograph about Samar itself. The last two items are "request item" status, which I gather means that they're in closed stacks and need to be requested with a student ID.

Any chance of you being able to do that for me?

Yep, closed stack books require a student ID. I may be going back to school next week to meet my UROPS supervisor-- I'll let you know the details when they're confirmed.

Ditto all that [livejournal.com profile] deadspeaker said about needing a student ID. I will actually be going to the library next week, probably on Monday, to pick up a couple of items myself. You can email me: elainechow at mac dot com, to let me know the title of the book that you need, and I'll make a request for you.

Hmmm. I think pretty much anyone with a wifi card can use the NUS network since it doesn't, as far as I know, require authentication. (I have the NUS-VPN thing installed on my computer, but I've stopped using it once I found out it wasn't necessary.

They do occasionally stop people and ask for their matric cards at the door to the library, but not always. So you may be able to sneak in if you're lucky.
