I just read the rebirth of the Doom Patrol in the latest JLA, which seems to treat the DP as never having existed before, and Robotman, Elasti-Girl, Negative Man and the Chief as forming a brand new for the first time team.

What the fuck?

Someone explain this to me?

It was a prezzie for John Byrne. According to one of the comicbook industry gossip sites, they asked him if he'd take over DP, and he said, gee, the only thing I would want to do with DP is the old team in a modern setting. So they said, sure, why not.

Phweee.

I cannot imagine that DP team catching on in today's environment. I suspect this is going to be another retroactively non-canon Byrne project like Spider-Man Chapter One.

Three words:

John. Byrne's. Ego.

It's a retcon. Most seriously affected is Beast Boy, among active characters.

I'm going to take the contrarian position here, though. I don't blame Byrne for rebooting the Doom Patrol. They were always some of my favorite characters and I missed them after they were blown up.

For all that people rave over Morrison's DP, I was only moderately engaged by it and I was completely turned off by his gratuitous retcon that turned Niles Caulder from a benevolent (if cranky) organizer to an evil mastermind who had destroyed three lives in order to see what would happen as a result.

So, yeah, reboot that pile of garbage. Let's see if we get a better result this time.

My difficulty is not so much the retconning away of the Morrison series, but that it removes what was probably one of the more heroic deaths of the Silver Age, really.

I can hardly argue with that. :)

Of course, first we found out that Robotman survived, then Negative Man, then the Chief...

I was waiting to hear that Elasti-Girl's clone was actually the source of the bones that they'd found in the ocean and that she too had survived.
