Wot's Been Up
Aug. 7th, 2004 05:38 pmWell, what's been happening over the last couple of days? Well,
autographedcat and
kitanzi got married yesterday! Those crazy kids... congratulations to them.
telynor came back from England temporarily to sort out her stuff before she leaves again to marry
filceolaire - and congratulations once again to the two of them. She was actually around to borrow my car for transportation purposes in the time she's here (and give me some lessons in the process). The car's battery was dead, but we managed to jumpstart it and get it down to the local Pep Boy's at the Georgia Square Mall, where we figured - oil change, new battery, piece of cake.
Unfortunately (and I'm sorry,
hoo if you're reading this), the mechanic found incredible rust damage on the underside, to the point where his opinion was that it was unsafe to drive. He wouldn't even change the battery, since that would encourage us to drive it. The kind of damage he found would not have been caused by Georgia weather - it is due to the salt they put on the roads up north.
hoo must have missed this when he worked on the car before he passed it to me. Nobody's fault, just damn bad luck.
So, I have a car whose engine is in great shape, but is unsafe to drive. Great. So much for transportation. I spent that evening over at the palatial home of
autographedcat and
kitanzi trying to figure out how to get
telynor around the next day, since she needed to get down to Wetumpka, Alabama to get her divorce decree, and I needed to pick up my PC from
jost in Auburn. That night, I turned my face into the abyss and saw City of Heroes. Damn you! Damn you all to Hell!
The next day was a relatively fun road trip - but horribly tiring for poor
telynor. We drove through the Alabama countryside and through various little towns with names like Eclectic (not very), Notasulga ("Yes, it is indeed not a Sulga, although what it is I cannot tell."), and Loachapoka ("Do they poke back?"). We picked up her divorce decree from the Wetumpka courthouse after some bureaucratic snarl-ups... see her journal for details... and then went over to Auburn to pick up my PC - and pick up a copy of City of Heroes on the way.
Okay, as
bedlamhouse says, City of Heroes may not be internet crack, but it is internet pot. In other words, it's a gateway game. It's also incredibly addictive, and incredibly fun. I can't really describe it properly because I'm having a fun overload. Character creation is fun. Tutorial a bit tedious, but once you start slamming down on the bad guys, fun. Missions are fun. Teaming up is fun. New powers are fun.
Character creation - powers are a bit limited at first, but I'm just jazzing at recreating the characters
logam and I used to bat around when we were still in High School. Like
autographedcat and
bedlamhouse, I play on the Pinnacle server, and I have several characters there. My favorite, though, and the one I've so far boosted to Level 9, is my Technology Blaster, "Battlebug".

Battlebug
logam may find the costume familiar - it's the closest I could get to my old hero, Dragonfly - the name Dragonfly was taken already on the server. One of the challenges is to come up with new names, since there are like, what 180,000 users distributed over all the servers? So, even on a server like Pinnacle, there are tens of thousands of characters. Names can be a problem, but I lucked out with Battlebug, because that's even got a cool ring to it.
I may or may not get tired of this after a while, and God knows what's going to happen once semester and lessons start, but right now, it's so much goddamn fun I may just explode. So if you don't know where I've been, Paragon City is where I've been. And if you do see me on, do say hello, and tell me to go and eat.
Other heroes I have are Convector (Mutant Blaster) and Mystery-Man (Science Tanker).
Now, if you'll excuse me, Battlebug has some homeless people to rescue from the Lost in the sewers of King's Row, before those fiends perform unspeakable deeds to them...
"Time to take out the trash!"

Date: 2004-08-07 03:01 pm (UTC)Pfft. My car has so much rust on the undercarriage, that when Jiffy Lube did a transmission flush, part of the line pretty much got flushed out because it was all rust XD We had it replaced with a rubber hose. And I have a leak in the gas tank. Still drive it every day.
Uhm. On second though, that makes me sound crazy for driving it...

Date: 2004-08-08 01:38 am (UTC)Curt Powers! So that was his name. I couldn't remember, so I gave Battlebug a new identity and origin:
Thad Connors was nicknamed "Bug" in his youth because of his interest in entemology. He graduated from MIT with a Ph.D. in electrical and mechanical engineering, basing his thesis on biochemical transfer of electrical power in insects. He designed a powered exoskeleton based on those theories. When the Fifth Column (a neo-Nazi paramilitary group in CoH) tried to steal the suit, Thad and the protoype was saved by the 60s hero, the Battle-Bug, who was fatally injured during the battle. Vowing to repay the debt, Thad donned the suit, becoming the all-new, all-amazing Battlebug!
Or that's the theory. Can't even remember Dragonfly's origin now, except that I'm almost certain there was a Golden Age Dragonfly, too.

Date: 2004-08-07 11:03 pm (UTC)I've heard a lot about City of Heroes. I really like the concept, but I dunno if it's enough to sway me from FFXI.

Date: 2004-08-07 11:38 pm (UTC)On Pinnacle you can find me as Lavastorm (Mutant Blaster), or one of my Kobolds (yes, we have an entire guild of Kobolds). Lvis the Kobold (mutant tanker) and Fury the Kobold (magic scrapper) are my favorites at the moment. :) (Our guild is Leapin' Lizards)
