The SwissMemory USB - Blade, nail file, LED torch, ballpoint pen, screwdriver, key ring, and USB memory up to 1 GB. Everything a troubleshooter needs to pick a lock, search for a laptop, steal some files and get out again.

It's tempting, but I'd be very scared of forgetting to pack it in checked luggage (or forgetting to leave it at home if I wasn't checking luggage) for plane flights and having whatever data's on the USB drive get lost or fall into wrong hands. I'd keep my USB drive separate so that I won't have to worry about that "security" aspect.

Oh, I definitely wouldn't use it as any kind of permanent storage - just as a means of quickly getting stuff from one computer to another without a network connection. But yeah, the plane bit is an issue in these paranoid post-9/11 days.

They do a version ...

... without a knife blade for those who want the other functions and for it to be "aircraft safe".

And ThinkGeek.com have the regular (with blade) up to 1Gb!

Oooh,

ThinkGeek also point out
The USB flash drive portion of the knife can easily be removed, for safe airline travel (and successful passage thru security).

so at worst, you keep the USB drive and lose the rest of the knife, if you forget.

And of course SwissMemory makes me think of Quantum Leap, which doesn't exactly inspire me with confidence...

I saw a test of one of the early models in a mobile computing magazine. Apparently the USB is a little bit slow in terms of speed, compared to other comparable products. On the other hand, hey, Swiss Army knife, 's cool.

Doesn't sound all that practical. I wouldn't want to leave my Swiss Army knife tethered to a computer. Even if the memory stick is easily detachable, why not buy a separate one to start with?

It's the same answer to the question of why buy a multitool instead of separate tools - it's all in one package. You can keep the whole thing with you, detach it when you use it, and snap it back when you're done. YMMV.
