khaosworks: (Doctor 2005)

Had a lovely weekend at [livejournal.com profile] autographedcat and [livejournal.com profile] kitanzi's place, and met up with them and [livejournal.com profile] gallamor and [livejournal.com profile] katyhh to catch Revenge of the Sith. I'm not going to say too much about it except that I was bored for most of the first half and it really only started picking up when Anakin went all Dark Side (come on, that's not a spoiler). Even then, it was kind of blah. Better than Episode II but that's damning with faint praise. To be honest though, I was never really going to like it unless they had the original cast come out at the end to do the final scene of "Hair" or the equivalent. Or maybe if we saw Jar-Jar being dismembered. Sadly, my hopes that Anakin would show what a badass he was by sending Jar-Jar's head back to his friends in a box ala Seven were not realized.

But enough happy thoughts. The title of this entry refers to this past weekend's episode of Doctor Who, Steven "Coupling" Moffat's The Empty Child. Again, there's not much I can say about this except that Moffat turns in a script that although has a few funnies, is genuinely freaky and will obviously scare the living crap out of the kiddies - as well it should. Where Father's Day was a tale for us grown-up fans, this was another traditional Who in the vein of The Unquiet Dead and it worked very well. Richard Wilson's cameo showed what an incredible actor he is, stealing the show for the moments he's on, John Barrowman was pretty good as Captain Jack, Florence Hoath was adorable as Nancy - I'm joining the campaign for Nancy as companion (if she survives) - and well... what else can you say about a script that makes, "Are you my mummy?" the scariest four words in the English language (next to "Hello, Jehovah's Witnesses!")?

4/5 - only because it's only the first half of a two-parter.

Nancy would make a very good Companion. Heck, the Doctor complimented her. In light of him 'only accepting the best'...

For such a scary story, it was curious that the BBC screened it half-an-hour earlier than usual - to scare more little kids maybe? Not so sure myself, I think it was to acclimatise us for the *really* scary even of the evening: The Eurovision Song Contest!
