khaosworks: (Who?)

Here's a trivia question to file away. Of course, you could Google it, but what would be the fun?

In the classic comedy sketch "Who's On First", as everyone knows, Who's on first base, What's on second and I Don't Know's on third.

Which other positions are mentioned, and what names are given to these players?

For bonus points, which position is not assigned a player?

The battery, of course, are Today (catcher) and Tomorrow (pitcher). ISTR that the outfielders include Why and Because (though I always confuse which is in left, and which in center), and the routine ends with the shortstop, I Don't Give a Damn (also Darn, depending on which venue they were playing to). That leaves right field unmanned (not, perhaps, in the #filkhaven Badge sense, though :-)

Easy one

Today is catching. Tomorrow is pitching. Why is in left field. Because is in center field. I don't give a darn is the shortstop, and most people will agree that the right fielder is never named, although some will claim that he is really named Naturally.

Right field., according to the board game (yes, there way) is 'Nobody'.

Others have covered the fielding positions, but what about the manager?

First line of the bit is: "Abbott: Well Costello, I'm going to New York with you. You know Bucky Harris, the Yankee's manager, gave me a job as coach for as long as you're on the team."

Costello must be the right fielder.

Some versions of the routine omit this line and instead discuss a St. Louis club. I have also seen a video showing Costello in a uniform reading "St. Louis Wolves."

Without looking at anyone else's responses....

P: Tomorrow
C: Today
LF: Why
CF: Because
RF: not named
SS: I Don't Give A Darn

I may have these mixed up. It's been too long since I last heard the routine.

Everybody else has beaten me to it. *sulks*

I used to have that entire routine memorized. Bet I still have quite a lot of it.

But has Tom Cruise come to collect you from the care home yet?

Useful tip: When he shows up, go off with his *girlfriend*, not with him!

I had a pair of friends who had the routine memorized. It was great watching them go at it.

If I remember correctly, the initial proposition was that "Baseball players have funny names these days," and used Feller (Bob, who would become a Hall of Fame MLB pitcher) as their first example, the listener would conflate his name with "fellow" of course.
