Being Alive
by Stephen Sondheim
from "Company"

Somebody hold me too close
Somebody hurt me too deep
Somebody sit in my chair
And ruin my sleep
And make me aware of being alive

Somebody need me too much
Somebody know me too well
Somebody pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support for being alive
Being alive
Make me alive
    Make me confused
    Mock me with praise
    Let me be used
    Vary my days
But alone is alone, not alive
Someone I have to let in
Someone whose feelings I spare
Someone who, like it or not
Will want me to share
A little — a lot — of being alive
Make me alive
    Make me confused
    Mock me with praise
    Let me be used
    Vary my days
But alone is alone, not alive
Somebody crowd me with love
Somebody force me to care
Somebody make me come through
I'll always be there
As frightened as you to help us survive
Being alive
Being alive
Being alive
Being alive

We just saw that!

N and I have long loved the soundtrack, so we splurged on tix to the current Broadway production. A good production -- but I was surprised to find that the soundtrack alone carries almost as much impact as a good production.

Anyway, it's a terrific song.

If you can manage to rent or buy it, get a hold of the DVD that has a short film chronicling the gruelling 18-hour recording of the original cast soundtrack album that took place when Company debuted. Elaine Stritch's performance of "The Ladies Who Lunch", that ends the film, is quite a sight to behold, and to hear.
