San Diego trip
Apr. 5th, 2007 08:33 pmSo I'm finalising my plans for the San Diego Comicon trip, and wondering if I should extend my stay after the con - seems a shame to just go there and not see anyone else. Anyone in California want me to visit?
(One of the things I'm thinking about is maybe taking a trip down to Anaheim to the Disney California Adventure park to take the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror ride. Yes, I'm a geek. Of course, my knowledge of Californian geography is sketchy at best, so I really don't know where you all stay or what's in easy reach. Let me know?)

Date: 2007-04-06 11:01 am (UTC)- The Field is wonderful. They sustained us for many years, and while not the cheapest, there are always left overs, you don't get rushed, and it's always great.
- Pokez is vegetarian Mexican. I don't care for it, but my little brother
- Mexican: Not in Gaslamp. You want your Mexican food to be vaguely suspect, and purchased from a hole in the wall. Take the trolley to the 13th & Imperial transfer station (1 stop south of the con) and there's a good taco shop there. My 'home' shop was Humberto's at 25th and C st, but that would involve a taxi or concerted busing. Get a burrito. Get 1, then get another if you're still hungry. California burrito or carne asada burrito. Condimentize as you will. This is the most San Diego thing I can tell you to eat. This is what locals will spend hours debating the finer points of holes in the wall around the city. A burrito and a large horchata (cinnamon rice milk), and you're set.
-The Indian in Gaslamp sucks. Just don't do it.
-Stay out of Moose McGillicuddy's and TGI Friday's unless you intend to kill the occupants. Woo Girls and Yeah Guys wall to freaking wall.
-Trattoria La Bocca is my favourite in the district - it's a birthday place for me. Gnocchi in Sauce Aurore. SO GOOD.
Remember, ComiCon has been in SD for ever. As long as your light saber isn't bothering anyone, you can go into most any restaurant in costume.
Oh. Bring your own drinks if you can. What the convention hall charges is worse than highway robbery and bordering on highway carjacking and raping.

Date: 2007-04-06 07:09 pm (UTC)Personally, in recent years I've found myself eating a lot of meals at the Tin Fish (I think that's the name). It's right across the street from one end of the CC past the fountains, and basically does decent, reasonably priced, seafood.

Date: 2007-04-20 01:27 am (UTC)Disneyland is up from San Diego. It usually takes about an 1 1/2 hours of non-rush hour driving to get there from here. (Sunday night is a rush hour as everyone heads back to LA. There is a train called The SurfLiner that goes to Anaheim and LA.
Our house is open if you want to visit San Diego for a day or two after the con. My wife is Lapis Laz.
