Donna says "I do!"
Catherine Tate accepts proposal to star in fourth series.
Catherine Tate is set to return to the TARDIS for the complete 13 week run of Series Four of Doctor Who.

Award winning comedian Tate will reprise her role as Donna, the runaway bride from last year's Christmas special, despite turning down the Doctor's invitation to travel with him at the end of that adventure.

When Catherine was asked if she would like to become The Doctor's new companion at the press screening of The Runaway Bride, she replied, "I would love to, but no one has asked!" Well, now they have.

"Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series," announced Doctor Who's executive producer and head writer, Russell T Davies. "Viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008."

Catherine Tate : "I addedam delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling again through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey."

Freema Agyeman who has played Martha Jones, The Doctor's companion throughout the critically acclaimed third series, will return to the show to join The Doctor and Donna mid series.

I won't panic. I remember when Billie Piper was announced as Rose and I got all snitty as well.

As annoying and shrill as Donna was, Catherine Tate is talented enough that it'll come down to the writing, as usual.

But then it's Russell T Davies, so you can never tell; it could be gob-smackingly good or a general WTF.

Magic eight-ball says "Wait and See".

I don't know. Annoying and shrill written well is likely to be more annoying and shrill than annoying and shrill written badly. Or maybe just differently annoying and shrill.

It's not so much the character herself, though that is bad enough...it's not so much that the "brand new" companion is someone we've all seen before, and of whom some of us have already had more than enough...it's the desperate poverty of RTD's imagination when it comes to companions. Will he ever pick someone...oh, I don't know? Male? Older? Middle class? Or even, gods help us, from somewhere other than the south-east of England? Lots of planets have a north, except apparently Earth.

Well, Donna got less annoying and shrill towards the end of The Runaway Bride, and that Donna would be a lot more bearable. As long as they don't make her fall in love with the Doctor. Not that I'm a strict no hankypankyist, but three in a row is just too much.

I'd still hate to be the monster who kidnapped her, though.
