Thinking of replacing my 12" Powerbook G4 with a MacBook Pro in the next couple of weeks or so, which leads me to the weighty question... what to name it?

My first Powerbook G4 was named Cassandra, because like her, Mac users predict the future but no-one believes us.

My next Powerbook G4 (current one) is Charity, a silly pun because I wanted not just to evoke the Faith, Hope and Charity trifecta, but I could also say that I was giving money to Charity when I bought accessories for her.

My Mac Pro is named Emma, after the inimitable Emma Peel.

Any suggestions for the new lady in my life? To follow the Avengers theme, Tara comes to mind, but I'm looking for quirky, multi-layered meaning names.

You could name her after a kind of apple. My first apple was called Pippin, which is a name for a little apple. Since you go for women's names, you could call it Granny Smith (tart, green, crunchy) or Pink Lady (sweet, pink-yellow, crunchy). Or Gala, another kind of apple (I don't remember how they taste, but they're yellow with a blush of red along one side) but also a word for a celebration.

I named my other computers after Hypatia (librarian at the Library of Alexandria), Sophia (wisdom), Taliesin (the only male name; a noted Bard), and my present one is Scheherezade (since she's an entertainer).

Other things you might call her--Sweet Reason (an appeal to Reason can sometimes solve problems) Temperance (a reminder not to spend too much time online) Norn (she can see into the past and future but has only one eye), Clio (the muse of history) ...

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Heh -- my desktop is named Hypatia.

My current laptop is Socrates; for one, I got it for law school, which is heavy on the Socratic method, and for two, I'm sure it's going to get killed by a drink.

You call yourself a Doctor Who fan and "Bessie" hasn't occurred to you already?! :-)

Diana, maybe? Both a comic book character and a goddess.

You went to Georgia... did Scarlett not occur? Of course, you'd likely be resigning yourself to a life of her doing things she shouldn't for the greater good of Tara.

We used to name ours after various gods, starting with Loki.

I suggest perusing here: http://www.godchecker.com/
