Hmmm ... I don't quite understand how this works.

Vote counting is not finished, yet they already know he won? What about California, they just closed the polls an hour and half ago. How do they already know who won?

Basically, the projections based on votes counted put him beyond any margin of error, so he's already gotten over the 270 electoral college vote threshold. McCain has conceded the election.

Because based on every single poll ever done in California since he won the nomination, Obama was going to win there and win big. There were around 25-30 states where there was never any doubt one way or the other who'd win, and those were the ones that got called by the networks about a microsecond after the polls closed there.

As soon as Obama went over 225 (more realistically, 212 (I think) to include Washington and Hawaii), anyone who'd been paying attention to the individual states knew he'd won. The networks just couldn't actually call it until the polls closed in CA, WA, HI, and OR.

And once he'd won Ohio, the odds in his favor were such that realistically McCain should've been putting the final touches on the concession speech.
