Watching the Dems
Jul. 28th, 2004 12:06 pmWatching the Democratic National Convention coverage, naturally.
Awesome speeches, all the more awesome for their care not to mention Bush directly, if at all. The strategy, of course, is to reach the swing voters, not to alienate them, and so far they're succeeding, I think. It'll be very interesting to compare this to what the GOP will do at their convention.
Carter, of course, was the exception. He went straight for the jugular, but then he's an elder statesman now and he can get away with that. "We cannot lead if our leaders mislead," will go down in history.
Gore showed the fire that he should have four years ago, and Clinton - man, say what you want, but he's still got it. You could see the crowd creaming their jeans - and even the Daily Show couldn't make fun of him... much.
And then there was Barack Obama.
The skinny kid with the funny name, drilling into the crowd and hopefully the nation that it's not about liberal or conservative, or democrat or republican, or black, white, asian, latino, but about what's good for a United States. Like many, I wish I was in Illinois and I could vote for him. He better be careful, because if he's the kind of guy that people like to assassinate - he's that good. Catch his speech on C-SPAN or CNN.com if you can, because one day you'll be telling people about the day you saw him take the floor at the Fleet Center in 2004.
