khaosworks: (Who?)

These five question brought to you courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] pbristow

1. If you found you needed to raise a lot of money very quickly (say 1000 USD or equivalent in a week), what would you do?

Mmmm... I really don't know. Cash in my credit cards? Life insurance? Sell my comic book collection? Go get a loan from friends or a cash advance on some freelance writing? I've never been particularly good with money matters...

2. If you were stranded a thousand miles from anyone else in the world, but in your current home, with food spotaneously appearing in the freezer / cupboard when needed and with all infrastructure and utilities still mysteriously working... What would you do with your time?

It probably says how sad and solitary my existence is in that I suspect very little would change with my lifestyle. I'd spend most of it on the net, doing what I do every day; surf, edit Wikipedia. If I can still order books from Amazon and have cable television and still be able to "talk" with people virtually, life would be almost normal. Since this scenario postulates that I no longer have a job, in that sense, it'd free more time for reading and writing.

3. Same setup as (2) - What would you miss the most?

Human contact, of course. I may be solitary, but I'm not a misanthrope. Even socially dysfunctional weirdos need the occasional hug to reassure them they are still cared for.

4. You receive a voucher to buy any one item of health & fitness training/exercise equipment. What do you get, and why?

Treadmill. Good cardio workout, and it's aerobic. Keeps the spare tire down.

5. You're arrested. You get one 'phone call. Who?

A good criminal lawyer. Remember kids, if you get arrested, your first call is always to your lawyer — not your mom, not your dad, not your girlfriend, not your priest, not anybody else. Your lawyer, because he's the one who will know what to do. The other details will all follow from there.

Be prepared?

I'm not planning on committing any crimes...but then again, I wasn't planning on taking in 14 bantam chickens either...these things happen. :) Should I take the time now to find a good criminal lawyer and have his number handy, or will they let me surf the web for a few mins before my call to track one down...? :)

And what if my brother's a non-criminal type lawyer...should I hve him go find a lawyer for me instead? Do they allow long distance calls overseas?

So many questions crop up from this one question...

Well, I would always recommend that you at the very least know the number of a reputable law firm. You may not get the specific lawyer you want - if he's a good one, he'll be in demand - but you can get an associate who may be, if the firm's any good, at least decent.

You recommend calling a lawyer directly, rather than calling a clue-enabled family member and saying "send a good lawyer"? I guess if I knew a good criminal lawyer I'd call him too, but failing that, I'd rather my husband do some research than me picking someone at random from the phone book.

Well, the point is that you shouldn't call some lawyer at random. Perhaps it's a matter of profestional bias, but I'd rather call a lawyer first than a family member, no matter how trusted (unless they were legally savvy as well), because so many things can screw up if you direct them second hand.

So the essence of your answer is "be prepared" - i.e. pick your lawyer (or firm of lawayers) now, and keep the number on you (e.g. with your credit cards), and memorise at least the name of the firm (in case you lose the number). - Yes?

Yes, that would be wise.

WRT No. 5, doubly important in the US, where the lawyer can immediately sit in on interrogations and thereby prevent any damaging admissions.
